A heavy, ponderous, and generally unappetizing performance, the fault for which lies not so much with Karl Richter, but with the slack playing of the London Philharmonic and the less than enthusiastic singing of the John Alldis Choir. It's strange to think how much better this might have been had Richter recorded it with his usual forces in Germany, but for whatever reason, things just didn't come together this time around. --David Hurwitz

As one who has 25 recordings of this oratorio, I can attest that this is simply the best of them all.

Donald McIntyre brings his legendary Wagner-capable vocal stature, self-taught masterful technique, and natural expressiveness to Handel's haunting arias and challenging melismas. This guy could really make a big relaxed athletic sound for a long time on a single breath, and he could do it with sincere in-the-moment emotion in his voice, true vocal acting, especially the emotion of anxiety. This is my reference choice Messiah. I've spent years studying recordings of this work.

I like my Handel big and bold, and that's what Richter gives you! Huge and intense performance, unlike any other...almost "German" (in a good way!).

There's a special magic and inspiration I find in this recording, I'm not sure if it's because i've listened to it so many times or because I'm a big Richter fan but this Messiah gives you everything you want from it...hugely wonderful ... Read More

In a nutshell: once you have listened to THIS rendition, you won't ever want to listen to another, nay, you won't even be able to bear another one. No one can fill Karl Richter's shoes.
Period.
